Reg.: Beliche - Dogs in Poor Welfare Conditions
Dear Sir,
We are writing regarding the dogs being kept near the
reservoir in Beliche.
These 28 dogs are chained in an open field, without protection from the elements.
They have no access to veterinary care, shelter, clean water or regular feedings
of a suitable diet.
The local authorities have been told about the situation since April 2005, but
have not as yet intervened. We understand that the numbers of dogs on the site
in Beliche has now been reduced, but that there are still at least ten dogs on
site. The authorities have now instructed the owner to remove these remaining
dogs and we would like to congratulate your authorities for taking this
initiative.
However we would urge you to ensure that this now happens and that the animals
are relocated to a safer environment that complies with Portugal’s existing
legal animal protection requirements.
We understand that those who have asked for your interference have been informed
on your actions and the consequences for the owner and "his" dogs.Is it true
that the (stolen?) dogs have returned to their owners. How did you find them and
how do you monitor their welfare? What consequences faces the dog-field owner?
Do you monitor and stop this kind of animal abuse in the future?
Please inform us.
We thank you for your consideration in this matter and we look forward to
hearing from you in due course.
Yours faithfully,
