After a concerned citizen alerted PETA to a squalid roadside menagerie
housing primates, moon bears, and snakes at the southwest entrance to
the Cu Chi tunnels outside Ho Chi Minh City, PETA traveled to Vietnam to
investigate. PETA discovered that the animals were confined to filthy
cages without food or water. Among the animals PETA found suffering in
appalling conditions were the following:
A
stumptailed macaque who has lived alone for four years in a
feces-strewn cage measuring 7 feet by 5 feet by 6 feet ? Two
7-foot-long boa snakes confined to a cage measuring 5.5 feet by 7
feet, with no room to move and deprived of water
A
gibbon who has lived alone in his cage measuring 7 feet by 6 feet -
for years, forced to live on wire fencing suspended off the ground
Three
monkeys, missing large amounts of hair all over their bodies, with
only a broken swing for enrichment
As many
as three large moon bears in a cage measuring 15 feet by 10 feet. An
adjacent cage houses one lone moon bear who is visibly suffering
from a toothache.
The animals
at Cu Chi tunnels are in immediate need of water, clean cages, and
proper veterinary care. Therefore I urge you to contact the government
of Vietnam immediately and arrange to transfer the animals to a safe,
reputable sanctuary where they can live out their lives in peace.
